Driving across Los Angeles, a watchful eye might be struck by the sheer number of abandoned shopping carts found throughout neighborhoods across the city. Their very sight tied to the socio-economic status of the areas they are found and their use by the most vulnerable within the city. Like the ‘invisibility’ of those at the fringes of socio-economic class, these carts too are often completely ignored.

CART (driverless) is an autonomous kinetic sculpture built by repurposing one of these many invisible objects littering streets of Los Angeles, California. It is outfitted with custom sensors and electric motors as part of a larger choreography of kinetic and autonomous everyday objects that were once ignored and forgotten.

Exhibited at Weak or No Signal, New Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, 2018.
