TOTAL OFFICE ENVIRONMENT
Kinetic Immersive Installation & Performance
2017

The automated office
Deep learning, copy machines & self-driving cars.
The office of the future is the office of the past.
What's that old phrase?
In the 1960s, automation promised a dream of less work and more leisure.
I think it was, "work hard, work harder."

Uncertainty begets anxieties: AI and machine learning pose new uncertainty about the future of work, society, and leisure.
TOTAL OFFICE ENVIRONMENT is a choreographed physical performance and immersive kinetic installation that explores the poetics surrounding the uncertainty and promise of automation.
Part performance, part immersive environment--for this installation we transformed an entire art gallery into a constructed cubicle landscape of robotic sculptures, an office worker, and lots of beige. It is an exploration of human desire, utopian dreams and entropy within the space of perpetually gurgling water cooler, shoes that mysteriously fall from the floor above, and a self typing computer that connect an above average heat wave to a pending rise in wheat commodities and global unrest.
This is a non-place, where robots are cheap and time is irrelevent, but work and the promise & anxieties of automation still exist.
The office of your past is not the office of the future.
Exhibited at New Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, 2017.
