OK TO SHIP: Is it just me, or have we not moved?
Immersive Installation & Performance
2017
Body Scanners, Travel bans, or “Please turn off your cellphone.”
An interactive and immersive kinetic installation in which viewers are shuffled through an absurd dream-like experience and performance.
OK TO SHIP uses humor and absurd cartoon interactions to explore anxiety and uncertainty surrounding security checkpoints and 2016 U.S. public policy of travel bans. In an attempt to access a gallery space, a pop-up security apparatus was installed overnight which required visitors to be screened before entry. The resulting experience was one of initial familiarity but transcended into a strange, absurd, and disorienting experience of DIY metal detectors, a Roomba vacuum as a public loudspeaker system and clinical therapists as security personnel.
The resulting "reveal" was an open air gallery whose only art was the wine, cheese, and an empty space for strangers to build community around their shared experiences and differences.
